The Importance of Pharmaceutical Knowledge in a Pediatric Office

With so many medications available or being tested in clinical trials, the intricacies of pediatric illness require a complex and sophisticated knowledge of drug pharmacology, indications and side effects. Especially in treating children with developmental and school/learning problems, this knowledge helps the pediatrician to manage these patients and their medications. By reviewing scientific information and studies about medications, the pediatrician is able to make informed decisions about medication use.

By reviewing basic laboratory, pharmacologic, clinical, and regulatory materials the pediatrician is equipped to make informed decisions about drugs and vaccines. In addition, he can interpret the clinical and pharmacologic information about a drug or vaccine to assist in interpreting potential side effects and causation, e.g., possible effects/causation in instances where drugs were used during pregnancy and a child was born with birth defects.

Ideally, the pediatrician stays up to date on information about clinical drug trials, such as in pediatric psycho-pharmacology.
